KING OF GREECE
QUESTION REGARDING FUTURE STATUS.
MR CHURCHILL DEFINES POSITION.
(British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.30 a.m.) RUGBY, November 9.
In accordance with the principles of the Atlantic Charter, it would be for the Greek people themselves to decide the future of their country, Mr Churchill said in the House of Commons, replying to a question regarding the future status of the King of Greece. “The King of the Hellenes himself declared in a broadcast on July 4 that as soon as the security of the country was complete and the necessity of future operations allowed, a free and general election for a constituent assembly would be held,” Mr Churchill added. “Until the Greek people can express their will in conditions of freedom and tranquillity, it is the settled policy of his Majesty’s Government to support the King of the Hellenes, who is at onceour loyal ally and constitutional head of the Greek State.”
