FEDERAL CONTROL
OF AUSTRALIAN COAL MINES LIKELY TO REMAIN LONG AFTER WAR ACCORDING TO COMMISSIONER (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.10 a.m.) , SYDNEY, This Day. Government control of coal mining will have to remain in some form long after the war has ended, Australia’s Coal Commissioner, Mr Mighell, has declared. Yesterday, at a. round table conference of Federal Government, coal owners and miners’ representatives, Mr Mighell was given virtual control of all Australia's coal production problems, including that of securing continuity of work in the mines.
' He said the Government would have to design post-war machinery that would prevent coal owners entering on ruinous price wars to exploit available markets. This control would also ensure that coal was conserved as a national asset and not wasted by bad mining or other faults. The representatives at yesterday’s conference pledged themselves to do everything possible Ito collaborate with each other to increase coal output and maintain continuity of production in all mines. Every coal mine in New’ South Wales was working yesterday.
