The Navy Department has disclosed that it has commissioned eights quadrons of PB 4YS (the Navy version of the Liberator bomber) and is rapidly expanding its long-range patrol bomber force, for reconnaissance in the Pacific, and anti-submarine work in the Atlantic. It is pointed out that longrange bombers, with planes from carriers, have done most to defeat t,he enemy submarines. The United'Press estimates that 768 Allied and neutral vessels were sunk in the Atlantic since Pearl Harbour, fifteen since May 1 and none isnce September 3.
