DRUNK & DISORDERLY

TWO MASTERTON MEN CHARGED. CYCLE THROWN OFF BRIDGE. Before Messrs E. G. Eton and L. J. Taylor, J’s.P., in the Masterton S.M. Court this morning, Arthur C. Gunther, soldier, aged 30 years, and Harry McLeod Ewen, labourer, aged 30 years, appeared on two joint charges of unlawfully converting a cycle and being drunk and disorderly. Gunther was fined £3 for having been drunk and disorderly and on the other charge he was. convicted and discharged. Ewen was fined £5 on the cycle conversion charge and was convicted and discharged on the other charge. Senior Sergeant C. Murphy said that on Saturday afternoon Ewen and Gunther consumed liquor in Carterton and after attending a picture theatre in Masterton, removed a cycle from near the theatre. Close to the town bridge they fell off the cycle and Gunther threw it into the creek. They then stood shouting and pushing each other cutside Carlton House and were warned by Constables Bell and Berry. The constables returned to the station and on their way were followed and threatened by the accused, who used bad language. The constables then had no option but to arrest them. The loss of the cycle was later reported and the machine was recovered.

The Sub-Area Officer, Captain C. Regers, said Gunther was a soldier on furlough from the Middle East. He was grade 1 and liable again for service overseas.
