CARTERTON

BOWLING CLUB GREEN OFFICIALLY OPENED (“Times-Age” Special.) Six rinks were occupied on the Carterton green on Saturday at the official opening of the club’s season. A rink from Masterton included the president of the Wairarapa centre. The president, Mr J. L. Harris, welcomed those present. He referred to the opening of the Carterton Club in 1897, 46 years ago, and said that the club’s first president, Dr D. G. Johnston, Was a resident of Sumner and was still interested in bowling. He complimented the green committee and the superintendent for the excellent condition of the playing lawn and for the pretty surroundings. Mr Geo. Hayne, president of the Wairarapa Centre, spoke in a happy strain and congratulated Carterton upon their excellent green. Mr Harris called upon Mrs Harris to throw the first “kitty” and bowl the first bowl, which, was done amid applause. Afternoon tea provided by members was presided over by Mesdames J. L. Harris, E. T. Beaven, J. Newbould and Miss A. Sorensen. The games played resulted as follows:—A. Stubbings, W. Hendry, H. Smith, G. Hayne (s) beat E. H. Smith, Foss, Bain, Harris (s), 19/17; H. J. Brown, Spooner, Curtis, Tucker (s) beat Ingley, W. Hall, Daysh, Sorensen (s), 23/18; McPherson, Geo. Steven, Newbould, Hughan (s) beat W. H. Smith, Stent, E. Smith, Barber (s), 24/20; McGimpsey, Booth, Colson (s) beat Kilmister, Edwards, Beaven (s), 22/21; Hawker, Matson, Whyte (s) beat Adams, Pankhurst, Johnson (s), 22/17; Foster, W. Steven, Harp (s) beat Gordon, Simmonds, Riggs (s), 23/17. SUCCESSFUL DANCE. The dance held under the auspices of the Carterton Bowling Club’s Social Committee in the State Theatre on Saturday was a pronounced success, visitors being present from all parts of the district. A most enjoyable time was spent to music supplied by Mr Tom Udy’s orchestra. Much appreciated extras were contributed by Misses M. Herrick, L. Hopkins, Pte. Drysdale and Mr L. Logan. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs Logan, and a Cinderella Waltz by Miss Potter and partner. Mr Cliff Bambry made an efficient M.C. An excellent supper was provided. BOY SCOUTS 1 CARD TOURNAMENT There was a good attendance on Saturday evening at the Boy Scout card party. The prizes were won by Mesdames Ticehurst, Senr. and F. Jackson, Senr., Amundsen and Mr Edwards. The consolation prizes went to Mrs Holland and Mr Challis. Personal Items. The funeral of the late Mr Roy George Sowman took place on Saturday afternoon, the cortege being a very large one. The service was conducted by the Rev. W. F. Stent at the residence of Mr V. L. Robinson, Rhodes Street, Carterton. Mr Stent afterwards officiated at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs F. H. Giles, A. Walker and Corporal A. Jamieson (Wellington), Messrs Lloyd Banks, Keith Allen and S. Dwane. Among others, beautiful wreaths were sent by Woolworth’s (Nelson), where deceased was manager at the time of his death, the managing directors and executive officers of Woolworth’s, and various branches of the firm. Earthquake. A sharp earthquake was felt in Carterton in the early hours of Sunday morning.
