WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT EKETAHUNA. 17th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mrs E. Albretchsen presided over a large attendance of members and visiters at the monthly meeting of the Eketa.huna Women’s Institute when the 17th birthday was celebrated. A shoulder spray was presented to the president by the youngest member, Naomi Farrow. It was unanimously decided to join the Crippled Children’s Society. Mrs Albretchsen welcomed the visitors to the meeting, especially the president of the Federation (Mrs Burnett). Mrs R. Farrow read a report of the half-yearly Council meeting held at Woodville, and was accorded a vote of thanks. Posies were presented to three members who celebrated their birthdays during the month. All the grandmothers present were presented with beautiful posies, one member, Mrs W. Daniel, having 36 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Vocal solos were rendered by Mrs P. Bouzaid and Mrs D. D. Ryan. The candles on the birthday cake were lit by Mrs Burnett, who wished the Women’s Institute “many happy returns of the day.” Mrs Macky (Te Awamutu), who is a past president of both the Federation and the Institute, also extended birthday greetings and extinguished the candles. Mrs Carter and Mrs Hooper (past presidents), cut the -cake. Other birthday greetings were brought from-the Women’s Institutes at Rongokokako (Mrs Winter), Hastwell (Mrs J. Dick), Nireaha (Mrs Wilkin), Kaiparoro (Mrs K. Henson), Woodville (Mrs Giles), and Hamua (Mrs Hobbs). Committee members acted as hostesses and served afternoon tea. The winners of the various competitions were as follows: Advertisements, Mrs Jeffries. Jug cover: Mrs Baucke, 1 and 2; Mrs L. Burling, 3. Premier bloom: Mrs Richardson, 1; Mrs Carter, 2; Mrs Higginson and Mrs Baucke, eoual, 3. Flowers: Mrs Higginson. 1; Mrs Baucke and Mrs Higginson, equal, 2; Mrs Duncan, 3. A small bring and buy stall was well patronised. .
