BOMBED BY DAY
MANY TARGETS IN FRANCE & GERMANY
FLYING FORTRESSES STRIKE AT RHINELAND.
ATTACK ON IMPORTANT FACTORY.
(British Official Wirciess.) (Received This Day, 10.15 a.m.) RUGBY, November 7.
R.A.F. Boston medium bombers, flying with a Spitfire escort, bombed the German fighter station of Berny, in North France on Sunday morning. They were led by a French wing commander and included the Lorraine Squadron of the Fighting French Air Force. Soon afterwards Typhoon fighter-bombers, escorted by Typhoon fighters, struck at the Tricqueville and Beaumont Le Roger airfields. At Berny, bursts were seen at dispersal points on the edge of the airfield, on adjoining hangars and on a headquarters building. The Bostons bombed in good visibility and although flak was experienced, there were few German fighters about. All the bombers returned safely. Typhoons, which also attacked without loss, dived 6,000 feet to bomb.
At Beaumont Lc Roger bursts were seen on the landing ground and dispersal area, and the Tricqueville, airfield was, in the words of one pilot, “bombed good and proper though the Hun did not rise or put up any fight.” He said there was fairly intense flak, but the bombing was extremely accurate. Good weather, with only a slight ground haze,- gave them every advantage. Flying Fortresses, in daylight on Sunday, bombed Duren, 25 miles east cf Cologne. A secondary target in Germany was also attacked. All the Fortresses returned, but one United States Lightning -fighter did not return from offensive sweeps over Northern France.
The target of the Flying Fortresses at Duren was a non-ferrous metal v.orks making aircraft parts. The place was last bombed by the Americans three weeks ago.
