THE ROAD TO ROME
MILITARY OPINION IN LONDON.
HEAVY DIFFICULTIES STILL TO BE OVERCOME.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) (Received This Day, 9.55 a.m.) RUGBY, November 5,
Military opinion in London is that, while the Allied advance has quickened, the road to Rome is not “open,” as the Germans are likely to maintain a formidable defence along the Garigliano and Sangro rivers. The Garigliano affords excellent defensive possibilities, as the right bank is close to difficult heights, and while narrow plain against the left -bank affords some scope for the use of armoured forces, it is dominated by heights within easy gun range. Not until Cassino, at the southern end of the Sacco valley, and 'some 70 miles south-west of Rome, is captured can the direct road to Rome be said to have been reached, and even that.is Ijkely to be defended every mile by formidable German forces.
