Allies Advance From Five to Seven Miles VENAFRO OCCUPIED BY FIFTH ARMY PROGRESS BY MONTGOMERY’S MEN IN ADRIATIC COASTAL AREA LONDON, November 5. The whole German defensive front extending across Italy flßom coast to coast is described as being- in a state of flux.. The Fifth and Eighth armies have advanced for distances of from five to seven miles. The Fifth Army has occupied Venafro. The Eighth Army has pushed on beyond Isernia and has also gained more ground on the Adriatic coast. There are signs that the enemy is being reinforced, fresh divisions being brought in to replace those which have been badly battered and weakened. In the west the Germans haVe, fallen back to the northern bank of the Garigliaho River. They appear to be holding the river bank lightly with their defensive positions located in the hills a few miles to the north. . • ■ • In the Adriatic coastal area the Eighth Army is firmly established on the north bank of the Trigno River and has advanced to within five miles of the port of Vasto, which has been shelled by British destroyers. On the central mountain front another fortified town has been taken by the Americans.
