SUBURBS OF KIEV
ENTERED BY RUSSIANS WEAKEST FEATURE OF ENEMY FRONT. PROBLEMS FOR GERMANS IN SOUTH. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.55 a.m.) RUGBY, November 5. The cessation of German counterattacks near Krivoi Rog has been swiftly followed by a renewal of Russian pressure in the vital Kiev sector of the Middle Dnieper, which is the weakest feature of the whole German Eastern front. The Russians have now reached a .point only three miles from the centra of Kiev. MoscowlPress messages report the capture l ' o;c two north-western suburbs of Kiev, named Kievcoryenka and Puschavolitsa. German mention of “heavy defensive fighting” there indicates that the Russian attack may be a large scale one. There seems little doubt that the Germans have been compelled to divert good divisions from Kiev for their attempt to restore
the situation in the Dnieper bend, or at least to avert a disaster there. With the Russians opposite Kherson and Nikopol, as well a? maintaining their Krivoi Rog positions, however, the German situation in the bend has become even more difficult. At the Dnieper mouth, the Russians are within '7O miles of Odessa and within 80 miles of the pre-war Rumanian frontier. Soviet headquarters still ' make no mention of fighting near Kerch, where the Germans report that they are still being attacked across the Strait.
