SOVIET TROOPS ONLY THREE MILES FROM CENTRE OF CITY

East Bank of Lower Dnieper Almost Cleared GERMANS REPORT RENEWED RUSSIAN ATTACKS IN CRIMEA THREAT TO ENEMY FLANK IN WHITE RUSSIA LONDON, November 5. / The latest Moscow communique reports that Soviet troops are now only three miles from the centre of Kiev. Fighting in the Kiev region has been stubborn, but the Russians have captured several defence points. Down near the mouth of the Dnieper the Russians have taken an additional 30 inhabited places. They have reached the crossing opposite Kherson and wiped out a big German force attempting to escape. The Russians have cleared the eastern bank of the Dnieper in its lower reaches everywhere except s opposite Nikopol, where the Germans still occupy an area of marshy country. The Russians here are attacking vigorously. Russian attacks in the Nevel area and further north are threatening to turn the German front in White Russia at its northern end. The Germans report strong Russian attacks in the Crimea both at the mainland end and in the vicinity of Kerch. One report speaks of fighting in the town.
