Pilot Officer K. McMullen, son of Mr and Mrs T. McMullen, Masterton, has been promoted to the position of administration officer, overseas.
Mr R. G. Russell, 26 Pownall Street, Masterton, has received advice that his second son, L.A.C. Brian Russell, has arrived at his destination.
The Regent of Iraq, the Amir Abdul Illah, reached Britain on Thursday, and was met by the Duke of Gloucester, representing the King. The Dutch Consulate in Wellington has received a cable from London stating that Princess Juliana arrived at Surinam, Netherlands Guiana, on Tuesday. In connection with the Stage I. Degree examinations held by Victoria College University, the following exWairarapa pupils have been successful: —Chemistry, Stage 1, first 8.A., A. C. Moore. Medical intermediate, J. C. Kerslake.
The death occurred at Martinborough yesterday of Mrs Mavis Sutherland Tilson, wife of Mr Percy Tilson, of Okura, Greytown, and youngest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs W. J. Martin, of Huangarua, Martinborough. The funeral will take place on Monday at 1.30 p.m., leaving Haungarua for the Martinborough Cemetery. Major James J. G. Britland, reported killed in action, was born in 1903. He was a son of Mr and Mrs W. Britland, well-known and respected residents of Pahiatua, the former having taught school in the district for many years. Major Britland was educated at Konini School, Wellington College and later at Victoria College. He gained a Junior National Scholarship in 1915, a Senior National Scholarship in 1918, and a University Entrance Scholarship in 1920. From Victoria College, he graduated M.Sc. After a year at Wellington Training College he was appointed to the staff of the Whangarei High School and was there for almost ten years.
The appointment of the Rev. John Henderson, M.A., Ph.D., minister of St. Margaret’s, Juniper Green, Edinburgh, as professor of theology and Church history at Knox Theological Hall, has been recommended by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church. Nominations were called for, those nominated being Mr Bates, Dr. lan W. Fraser, Christchurch, and Dr. Henderson. As the result of the voting did not show a clear majority between Mr Bates and Dr. Henderson, the issue was again put to the assembly. The final voting resulted in favour of Dr. Henderson, who is to be unanimously recommended to synod.
