ROAD SAFETY

DEMONSTRATIONS TO SCHOOL CHILDREN.

BY BOROUGH TRAFFIC INSPECTOR.

A practical demonstration on road safety rules, by means of a model intersection, cars and pedestrians, has been given this week to the smaller children of Mastertoil primary schools by the Borough Traffic Inspector, Mr J. McGregor, who has been appointed school traffic instructor by the Wellington Education Board.

By the movement of model cars and pedestrians, Mr McGregor is able to give a clear picturisation of road safety rules and the results which follow by failure to observe a proper lookout in both directions before crossing the street. One small boy who watched the demonstration and saw a toy soldier knocked down by a car described it in these words: “That soldier must have been asleep until the motor car woke him up.” The children were invited to detect faults in demonstrations made by the inspector and to show the correct way themselves. Mr McGregor emphasised the need of children looking to the right and left before crossing a street, and of not loitering or playing on the roadway. Later this month, Mr McGregor will speak to the older children of the local schools.
