RED CROSS SOCIETY

MASTERTON SUB-CENTRE. MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Sub-Centre of the Red Cross society was held last night when Mrs Tolhurst presided. A letter was received for Sister Chisholm of the 3rd General Hospital thanking the Society for a case of food and hospital, comforts. ,A letter was received from the Y.M.C.A. asking for the co-operation of the Sub-Centre during the Youth Week starting on November 8. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Y.M.C.A. offering full co-operation and wishing the effort every success. All working groups reported the carrying on of the usual activities. Unless there is any special call for immediate work to be done, the working groups will complete all work on hand in the first week in December and will go into recess until the beginning of February.

Mrs Brockett reported that the Disabled Soldiers Occupational Handcrafts Club had had a most successful stall at the Carterton show, a great deal of work being sold and many orders taken. She stated that the disabled soldiers were now working every day in their workshop and that as soon as the present orders had been completed work will be started on goods for a shop week to be held in Masterton at the beginning of December.

The soldier's express their appreciation to all those who have helped them in the work of establishing and equipping their workshop. Recent donations include, timber from Mr Mackley, Mr H. Booth and the Master-' ton master builders, tools and patterns from Mr. Selby, wool, fur and beads from the Red Cross hospital and sewing groups, electric ipoker-work machine from Mr Farrell, afternoon teas at the workshop from the West School Junior Red Cross, Miss Guild, Miss Grant, Mrs 'Fagan, Mrs and Miss Beale. In connection with the Carterton Show the soldiers wish to thank the. Carterton P. &. A.. Association for all their help, Mr Goodwin for his publicity and Mr Brockett for the use of his lorry to transport all the goods. The Masterton Racing Club invited the disabled soldiers to be their guests at the recent Masterton race meeting and this outing was much enjoyed. The Red Cross transport service conveyed the soldiers to and from the races and also to the Carterton show. The Masterton sub-centre wish to express their gratitude for donations received and would particularly like to thank Mr S. Smith for all the work he has done for the Society since its inception, and which has been "given as a donation. The meeting decided that the R.S.A. be asked to appoint a representative to act on the sub-centre general committee.

The Womens Division of the Farmers Union asked for the co-operation of the. sub-centre at a meeting to be held to discuss the matter of social diseases. The meeting nominated Mrs Tolhurst and Mrs Lee to officially represent the sub-centre at this meeting and also asked that as many members as possible attend. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Wavell Circle of the Junior Red Cross at Central School congratulating the group on the honour it had gained by the winning of the competition for a design for a Junior Red Cross banner by Ivor Thomas, a member of this group.
