CARTERTON

DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL MEETING OF COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr H. J. McKenzie presided over the monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School Committee last night. There were also present: Messrs W. E. Knowlies, P. L. Beere, G. Stark and G. L. Chatwin. Apologies for absence, were received from Messrs C. K. Goodin, F. Denbee, R. P. Williams and the headmaster. The treasurer reported a credit balance at the bank of £66 Ils 4d. A grant for incidental purposes of £22 13s Id was received from the Wellington Education Board. The headmaster’s report showed a roll number in the primary department of 410, with 40 secondary pupils. The average attendance was 92 per cent. A suggestion made by the headmastei that parents be invited to visit the school on Friday, November 26, to witness a drill display was approved. It was decided to hold a school calf and lamb judging competition on the same day as the drill display provided it met with the approval of the staff. It was resolved that application be made to the Minister of Education for extra building accommodation at the Tyne Street school. ORDER OF DRUIDS TOTARA LODGE MEETING Totara Lodge No. 3 United Ancient Order of Druids, met last night, Arch Druid Bro. H. J. Bassett presiding. Grand Lodge wrote advising that the rules governing the sick funds of the lodge were to be strictly enforced, this having been made necessary through some members who, while in the receipt of sick pay, had been following some occupation which was contrary to the laws. Leading ' Aircraftman Clarence M. Kiddie wrote stating that he had gone overseas on active service and forwarded the necessary particulars for the lodge records. Superintendent Bro W. Fryer reported that all arrangements had been complete in connection with the 'dance to be held in the State Theatre on November 13. The prices of admission agreed to were: Men 2s 6d, ladies 2s. The proceeds are in aid of the Juvenile Lodge benevolent fund. i Past President Bro. A. J. Dew was presented with his P.D.P. collar. D.P. Bro W. Fryer, in making the presentation, congratulated Bro Dew on the able manner he had discharged his duties. Reference to the release of Bro lan A. M. Bond from an Italian prison camp was made, and it was resolved that a letter-of congratulation be forwarded to Mrs Bond. Bros. Geff Bain and L. Fryer, who are on active service, wrote stating they were well and sent greetings to lodge members. One proposal for membership was accepted and the initiation will take place on the next lodge nigfit. ' Favourble reports on members on the sick fund were made, after which the sum of £ll 14s was passed for payment for sick pay. A report was received that the Juvenile Lodge was progressing favourably and that the purchase of suitable games was under way. Girls’ Club Concert. The Carterton Girls’ Club will hold a. concert in the King’s Theatre tonight. An excellent programipe has been drawn up and an enjoyable time is assured patrons. Bowling Club Dance. On Saturday next a dance under the auspices of the Carterton Bowling Club will be held in the State Theatre. Two novelty dances for cash prizes will be held. A most enjoyable time is assured. The supper arrangements will be in the hands of a capable ladies’ committee. Vital Statistics. The following are the vital statistics for October, the figures for the corresponding month last year being given in parentheses:—Births, 5 (11); marriages, 0 (2); deaths, 1 (0).
