CHURCH & POLITICS

DECLARATION BY QUEBEC HIERARCHY , OTTAWA, October 23. Following a plenary meeting of the Council of Catholic Archbishops and Bishops in Quebec City a declaration was issued announcing that “the faithful are free to support, any political party upholding the basic Christian traditions of Canada and favouring needed reforms in social and economic order which are demanded with such urgency in pontifical documents.” The declaration further reiterates a condemnation of Communism. While the declaration makes no specific reference to the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, it is interpreted by the Catholic Weekly, “The Canadian Register,” as making it clear that Catholics have the same liberty of supporting the C.C.F. as the older parties. A statement by C.C.F. leaders observes that the declaration removes any shadow of doubt as to the right of Canadian Catholics to support and participate in the work of the C.C.F.
