NEW LANDING
AMERICANS ON BOUGAINVILLE 45 MILES FROM BUIN, ONLY SLIGHT OPPOSITION ENCOUNTERED. LONDON, November 1. American troops have landed on Bougainville Island, the last and largest Japanese-held island in the Solomon group. The landing was made this afternoon on a ten-mile front on the west coast of the island, 45 miles from the Japanese base of Buin. American amphibious forces took part in the landing and only slight opposition was encountered from the Japanese troops based near the coast. This landing comes within a week of the Allied landings on Mono, Treasury and Choiseul islands and Allied advances in these islands have continued. The landing on Bougainville brings the Allies to within 260 miles of Rabaul, the big Japanese base at the northern tip of New Britain.General MacArthur stated at Headquarters today that if the Japanese fleet came out he would welcome it and he would throw everything against it.
