EKETAHUNA

BOWLING CLUB OFFICIAL OPENING OF GREEN. (“Times-Age” Special.) The official opening of the Eketahuna Bowling Club’s green took place on Saturday last. There was a large attendance of bowlers and visitors. The president, Mr H. W. Gallagher, extended a very cordial welcome to all, and expressed the hope that the players would find the condition of the green to their satisfaction. In this connection, he paid a tribute to the many voluntary workers who had spared neither time nor effort in their endeavours to bring the green to the state of perfection which now existed. Reference was also made to the loss sustained by the club in the death of Messrs L. Houlebrook (past president), J. Bowyer and J. Ammunson. Those present stood in silence as a mark of respect to their memory. Good wishes for a speedy recovery to health were extended to Messrs M. R. Herbert and H. E. Greathead. Members of the club were informed that they had been invited to attend the opening of the Croquet Club’s green next Saturday. Mrs H. W. Gallagher played the first bowl, and the president declared tne green officially open. During the serving of afternoon tea by the ladies, Mr H. Smith, vice-presi-dent, thanked the ladies for their assistance and extended an invitation to them to visit the green during the season. Mr W. Manser suitably replied on behalf of the ladies. ANGLICAN CHURCH SOCIAL GATHERING. A social gathering, organised by the Ladies’ Guild, was held at the weekend and proved most successful, both socially and financially. The hall was tastefully decorated with tulips and Iceland poppies, and a dainty afternoon tea provided by the members was much enjoyed. Mrs A. Gyde entertained with two very appreciated recitations. Two competitions were held, a peanut race and “advertisements,” the winners being Mrs E .C. Albrechtsen and Mrs Utting. A small stall did excellent business. The vicar, the Rev. J. C. W. Mutter, expressed thanks on behalf of the Guild members. Visiting Bombers. Great interest was centred round the recent visit of the bombers to Eketahuna, when there was a large crowd of both town and country residents, as well as school children, present, the latter being particularly interested. As a result of the visit, about 28 ' young men have allowed their names to go forward as recruits to the Air Force. Personal Items. Mr E, Mason, of the railway staff, is spending his annual vacation in Christchurch. Mr W. Cheyne has returned from a visit to Nelson. Mrs Elcock, Hokitika, is the guest of her mother, Mrs L. Houlbrooke, Alfredton Road.
