HOLIDAY PETROL
AN EXTRA ALLOWANCE. WAR CABINET’S DECISION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. An announcement that the War Cabinet had decided, after reviewing the present stock and prospective supply position, that the petrol ration for private motorists during the holiday period would be at the full coupon rate, was made yesterday by the Minister of Supply, Mr Sullivan. He snict that the November ration would continue- at the halßcoupon rale and coupon No. 5 would be available. During December and January, however, coupons Nos. 6 and 7 at full face value would be available. Mr Sullivan explained that this action had been taken to enable the motoring public to draw their full two months’ ration at the most convenient time, having regard to their holiday vacations.
The Minister also announced that the War Cabinet had reviewed the question of petrol allowances made to members of the Armed Forces on final leave, furlough, etc., and it had been decided that the following policy would apply in the future:— Members on furlough from service overseas to receive 10 gallons a month for a maximum of three months. Members invalided back and discharged or members returned lor uuty in New Zealand to receive one licence for up to 20 gallons. Members on final leave to receive 10 gallons. The Minister said that whereas members on final leave could in the past obtain an allowance of ten gallons only when they wished to visit friends and relatives and the ordinary means oi transport were not suitable, they would now be able to obtain this allowance “as of right," In order to meet the anticipated increased demand on taxis during the holiday pqriod, added the Minister, provision would be made for an extra allowance to cover the Christmas and New Year holidays, primarily to provide for meeting trains and ships.
