RED CROSS SOCIETY MEETING OF SUB-BRANCH. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna sub-branch of the Red Cross Society was held on Wednesday, Mr M. W. Priest (president) presiding over a good attendance of members. Mr Priest made feeling reference to the sad death of Miss Margaret McAnulty, V.A.D., under tragic circumstances in the Middle East. It was decided to place on record appreciation of the fine service rendered by the late Miss McAnulty and to convey the deepest sympathy of members to her mother and family. A donation of £7 10s was received from the Macarthy Trust Fund. This is to be distributed amongst needy families in the district.
It was reported that two carloads of V.A.D’s. attended at Pahiatua during the month for the inspection of V.A.D’s. by Miss I. Crooke, Director General of V.A’s. in New Zealand. Recently a number of members visited Putara to attend a gathering arranged by the Junior Red Cross members. Ten local members sat for the first aid examination on Tuesday. It was stated that the card parties continue to be successful. MOTHERS’ UNION MEETING OF MEMBERS. The monthly meeting of the Mothers' Union was held yesterday afternoon. A service held in the church prior to the meeting, was conducted by the Rev. J. C. W. Mutter. Motions of condolence were passed with Mrs E. D. Toohill in the recent death of her father, and with Mrs McAnulty Sent, in the loss of her daughter. A Christian Order paper entitled “Friendship” was read by the Vicar, and a very interesting discussion ensued in connection with the many questions brought forward. The tea hostesses were Mesdames A. H. Hart and E. C. Albrechtsen. CROQUET CLUB PROSPECTS FOR SEASON, A meeting of the Croquet Club was held on the lawns on Wednesday when the president, Mrs A. H. Hart, presided over an excellent attendance of members. Arrangements were finalised for the opening day. Despite adverse weather the lawns are in splendid order at present and with a little more preparation, they should play well this season. The prospects for the season are considered to be excellent. Personal Items. Mrs J. O’Brien, Levin, has returned home after having been the guest of Mrs Rasmussen, Alfredton Road. Mr and Mrs H. Rogers and Richie, Station Road, have returned from a visit to Wellington. Mrs Carsildine, Wanganui, has been visiting her son, Constable H. Carsildine. Mr and Mrs Mcßride have returned from a visit to Blenheim and Queenstown. Mrs Gordon Martelli, Wellington, is the guest of her mother, Mrs E. C. Albrechtsen, Hastwell Street. Captain J. A. Carroll, New Plymouth, a nephew of the Misses Anderson, who was a prisoner in a camp in Italy, has been moved to Germany. In the recent examinations at Victoria College, Wellington, Miss Nola Hancock, of Putara, gained first class passes in education and geography. Miss Monica Burnett, a recent teacher at the Eketahuna District High School, gained passes in Latin and English. Mrs C. Pavitt, of Brougham Street, Wellington, was the guest of Miss C. Wilson over the weekend. Pte. Eric Johnson, Invercargill, an old boy of the Eketahuna School, who has been overseas with the 2nd Echelon, is visiting Eketahuna. Children’s Party. A very successful children’s party, organised by Misses Sybil Green and E. Simmers, was held in the St. Cuthbert’s schoolroom recently when sqme 60 children spent a happy time. Dancing and musical items, etc., were rendered by the children. Nireaha Dairy Factory. The Nireaha dairy factory re-com-menced manufacturing operations a few days ago.
