OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
OUR WAR EFFORT (To the Editor.) Sir,—At times one wonders whether there is any real intelligence in the make-up of the powers that be, if there is a plan, or do we just live for the day. For months now, over the radio and in the Press, these slogans have been hoard and seen: “Don't travel.” “Beware of the squander bug.” “Coal is a munition of war.” "The railways are strained to breaking point." At a recent Borough Council meeting the Gas Manager said that if there was not an improvement in the coal position gas would be rationed. Special trams from Wellington and Palmerston for the Masterton races. Saturday and Monday special trains from Masterton and Palmerston for Wellington races. Hundreds of tons of coal wasted last winter we could not buy coal. Thousands of pounds went through the tote that could have been put to* a bcttei use. In conclusion, one recalls the speech of General Frcybcvg. Is he looking to us in vain, or is this our latest war effort? Thanking you.—l am, etc., E. J. ESLER. Masterion. October 28.
