MADE BV OFFICERS & MEN OF AWATEA OPERATING TABLE FOR ARMY HOSPITAL MINISTER'S GRATEFUL ACKNOWLEDGMENT (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. “On behalf of the Government and. myself I desire to express deep appreciation of the generosity and fine patriotic spirit displayed by the officers and crew of the Awatea in subscribing the sum of £3OO for the purchase of medical equipment for the Army overseas,” said the Minister of Defence (Mr Jones) today. Mr Jones added that the money had been applied to the purchase of a modern operating table for a New Zealand general hospital in the Pacific. The action of the seamen, he said, was in keeping with the splendid traditions of the British Merchant Service. The operating table was handed over to the Army Medical Services a few days ago. It is marked with a small plate, inscribed: “This equipment' was provided by funds subscribed by the personnel of the Awatea.”
