PIRINOA
TRIBAL COMMITTEE SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Kahutara Hall was packed when the Pukio Tribal Committee held its last gathering for the year in connection with their Maori War Effort activities. There were several items given during the evening by members of the local and Pirinoa Tribal committees, these being much appreciated. The card games were won by Mr and Mrs Taylor (Pirinoa) in the ladies’ and men’s sections, respectively, with Mrs Aporo and Mr H. Playle filling the second places in each instance. The lucky numbers were won by Mrs Kaio and Mr Wood. Other prizes were won by Mrs Rangi (Pirinoa), Mr D. Green (Martinborough), Mrs Hatton (Martinborough), Mrs Madsen (Martinborough) and Mrs Riki. A waltzing competition was won by Mr and Mrs McHardy (Greytown), with Mrs Ahipene and Lieutenant Garrett second. The judges were Mrs H. Playle and Messrs D. Green and W. Davidson. Great interest was taken in this event and the judges’ decisions were popular. The committee is to be congratulated on the splendid manner in which the gathering was managed. The chairman (Mr J. Nunn) and his committee were untiring in their efforts to see that those present enjoyed themselves. The chairman referred to the help and co-operation extended to his committee in all their social gatherings by the residents of the district. He particularly referred to the assistance rendered by other Tribal committees and said that he desired to express the gratitude and appreciation of his committee to all. He stated that half of the net proceeds of the gathering that evening were being donated to the Red Cross Society’s funds. Excellent dance music was supplied by an orchestra from a camp, and the duties of M.C. were in the capable hands of Mr W. Davidson. Personal Items. Seaman Dick Te Whaiti, of H.M. Navy, who recently returned from service overseas, is spending a month’s leave with relatives here. Mesdames Gillies and Tau have returned to Hastings. Miss M. Ahipene is an inmate of the Wellington Hospital. Mr Ray Taylor had the misfortune recently to sever the tendons of one hand which necessitated treatment at a hospital for a few days. Whitebait. Whitebait are being netted at the Lake Ferry in fairly large quantities.
