NAVAL APPOINTMENT
IN SOUTH PACIFIC AREA DEPUTY TO ADMIRAL HALSEY (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, October 26. The new deputy-commander* to Admiral W. F. Halsey, commander, South Pacific area, is Rear-Admiral John Franklin Shafroth, who, before he came to the South Pacific some months ago, was commander of the United States naval forces in the South-East Pacific. This area included the waters adjacent to South America and the Panama Canal, and the command was created in May, 1942. As commander of that area. Rear-Admiral Shafroth was under'the general direction of Admiral Chester Nimitz, who was, and still is, in command of the whole Pacific area. Rear-Admiral Shafroth has succeeded Rear-Admiral T. S. Wilkinson, who visited New Zealand several months ago on Admiral Halsey’s behalf. RearAdmiral Wilkinson is now commander of an amphibious force in the South Pacific Now aged 56, Rear-Admiral Shafi oth is one of the biggest men in the United States Navy. He is a former football player. He is a very popular officer and is regarded as being extremely efficient. . “Rear-Admiral Shafroth, who visited New Zealand earlier this year, was promoted to the temporary rank of rear-admiral in November, 1941, and received permanent, or as New Zealanders would call it, substantive status in that rank on January 1, 1942. He entered the Navy in 1904 at the age of 17, and since then has seen about 20 years’ sea. service. He has completed the American Naval War College senior course, the same college’s correspondence course in strategy and tactics and the Army War College course.
