NEW ZEALAND AIRMEN
SERVICE IN FLEET AIR ARM ON ANTI-SUBMARINE PATROL IN MEDITERRANEAN (Special P.A. Correspondent.) (Received This Day, 12.20 p.m.) LONDON, October 25. Three New Zealanders who have spent the last 15 months in the Mediterranean, flying Albacores with the Fleet Air Arm, on anti-submarine patrol, are Lieutenant A. L. Foubister, of Christchurch, and Sub-Lieutenants D. N. Swap, of Matamata, and R. Ahearn, of Wellington. They were based for a time on Alexandria and then went to Gaza, where they did many night patrols. Lieutenant Foubister once attacked a submarine by moonlight, dropping depth charges, but could not see the result. The squadron later moved to Mersa Matruh and then to Misurata, patrolling over the sea from land bases, but saw no more submarines. They lived in tents all the time and spent last Christmas in the Desert. They went to Malta in July of this year. Lieutenant Foubister flew twice to Sicily and Italy, once taking the captain of H.M.S. Warspite to Reggio. Lieutenant Foubister returned to England by air. Sub-Lieutenants Swap and Ahearn are coming by ship.
