BATTLING FORWARD

FIFTH AND EIGHTH ARMIES IN ITALY Trigno Bridgehead Extended . AMERICAN ADVANCE IN CENTRAL AREA FLYING FORTRESSES AND LIBERATORS RAID AUSTRIA LONDON, October 25. ■ In Italy, the Allies have made more progress on both the Fifth and the Eighth army fronts. The Eighth Army has extended its bridgehead over the Trigno River and other forces are fighting their way towards the river in difficult country. American troops in the centre of the Fifth Army’s front have advanced three miles and captured a strategically important village. The Germans made three heavy counter-attacks, but the Americans smashed them and even gained more ground in places. Fortresses and Liberators from Italy yesterday raided targets in Southern Austria. Clouds prevented the crews from seeing the full results of the bombing. Last night R.A.F. Wellingtons attacked big marshalling yards in Italy. Other railway targets in Central Italy were also attacked. Eleven German fighters were destroyed.
