ATTACK IN FORCE
ON YOUNG FRENCHMEN HIDING, IN ALPS. FIERCE FIGHTING REPORTED. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, October 19. Sixteen thousand Vichy police and Laval motorised units have attacked tens of thousands of young Frenchmen hiding in the Alps, states a news agency correspondent at Allied headquarters. The German Command ordered the forces stationed in the Alps to open hostilities on guerillas operating in the mountains. The correspondent adds that fierce fighting is in progress round Salanche. The civilian population has been evacuated from the entire district of Abounance, Thornce, and Megveteo. The German news agency reports that an attempt was made today on the life of Laval’s Ambassador in Paris, Count de Brinon. Anti-tank mines, stolen from German headquarters, were placed at the windows and doors of the ambasador’s room, but, apart from a few splinter injuries, he was unhurt, though the room was wrecked.
