EKETAHUNA

GIRI. GUIDES NEW PRESIDENT ELECTED. (“Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of the Eketahuna Girl Guide Committee was held in Mr Walton’s office for the purpose of electing a new president in place of the former president, Mrs Christie, who has left the district. Mrs D. Hart was elected to this office. Two new members, Mesdames C. Raleigh and S. Daniel were appointed on the committee. Miss A. Anderson was nominated for the position of delegate to the annual meeting to be held in Wellington. It was resolved that letters of appreciation and thanks be forwarded to Miss Halliwcll for her good work in training both Brownies and Guides and to Mr Walton for his kindness in placing his office at the committee's disposal for meetings. Activities of Cubs. Miss Sybil Walton, assistant cubmaster, was present at a recent meeting of the Eketahuna Boy Scouts’ Committee, and submitted the following report of the work of the Cubs:—Parades have been held regularly and are well attended. Like the Scouts the Cubs have been applying themselves to the task of becoming proficient for the forthcoming rally and in this respect Mr Smith is a real teacher. On one occasion, owing to the unavoidable absence of Mr Smith it fell to Miss Halliwell (assistant Cubmaster) and the assistant Cubmistress to take the weekly parade. Reconstruction Work, A considerable amount of building reconstruction work has been carried out in Eketahuna recently. The general type of building is earthquake resisting, and in all cases they have been brought up to present day requirements. There are several premises of lesser importance yet to be dealt with. It is expected, however, that these in their line of importance will be completed, as men, material, and war conditions allow. It is gratifying to note what has really been, accomplished in the matter of repairs and reconstruction of buildings, stated the borough inspector in a report to the borough council. Food Shops and Eating Houses. The borough inspector reported to the Borough Council meeting that inspections had been made at intervals of local food shops and eating houses. At these premises earthquake damage had been almost completely restored and as a result the general standard had greatly improved. Presbyterian Service. The Rev. D. McNeur will conduct a Presbyterian service at Eketahuna on Sunday at 3 p.m. Fire Brigade Competitions. Members of the Eketahuna Fire Brigade competed for brigade trophies on Tuesday evening. The one-man coupling event was won by Foreman JRyan in 53 seconds. Superintendent Rogers was second with 54secs., and Fireman H. Fafeita third with 57secs. The second event for the Three-man Shield was won by Superintendent Rogers, Foreman Ryan and Fireman Williams in 26 3-ssecs. Second place was filled by Deputy-Superintendent Daniel, Firemen Fafeita and Trim, 70 secs. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs H. Kemp are visiting Lower Hutt. Mr A .H. Herbert has returned from a visit, to Wellington. Poultry Thieves Active. Poultry thieves were active in the borough on Wednesday night. At least three poultry yards were visited. In one instance a dozen laying pullets were taken and in another a number of ducks disappeared. The police have the matter in hand.
