ALLEGED STABBING

FRACAS ON'SHIP. TWO MEN WOUNDED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The story of a fracas which occurred in a ship’s forecastle, and in which a knife was allegedly used, two men being stabbed, was told by four witnesses in the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, yesterday. It was stated by the police that one of the injured men was still in hospital in a critical condition. Thomas Evans, a ship’s fireman, aged 19, was charged with having wounded William Fletcher with intent to do grievous bodily harm. He was similarly charged with wounding Joseph Connelly. A witness said that Fletcher, Connelly and Evans were in the forecastle and all appeared to have had drink. Evans made a lunge at the other two and a fight developed. Fletcher went back against the locker and said he had been stabbed. The quartermaster and another man separated Fletcher and Evans, taking away the former, who was bleeding from a wound. Witness and others remained in the room. Connelly drew accused’s attention to a cut in his (Connelly’s) trousers, and said that he had been stabbed. Accused was remanded for a week, no bail being fixed in the meantime. Further evidence is to be called by the police.
