TARGETS IN GERMANY
ALLIED NIGHT AND DAY AIR ATTACKS STRONG R.A.F. FORCE BOMBS LEIPZIG. FLYING FORTRESSES BLAST. DUREN. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, October 21. The R.A.F. last night made an attack in strength on the German city of Leipzig, 104 miles from Berlin. It is the home of important aircraft factories, and its railway station is one of the biggest in the world. It is the junction of many lines, including the line from Berlin. Mosquitoes were over Berlin and western Germany, The night’s operations cost 17 bombers. Strong forces of Flying Fortresses flew out from this country yesterday to pound the great metal plant at Duren, 25 miles south-west of Cologne, and an important airfield in Holland. United States headquarters says that the crews are jubliant over the results of the bombing. Some crews reported intense flak, but no fighters, and others said that they met as many as 25 fighters at a time. Eleven of the intercepting fighters were shot dows. The Fortresses accounted foi’ two, escorting Thunderbolts for six, and Allied fighters which carried out supporting sweeps for three. Eight Fortresses are missing from the operations.
