RED ARMY THRUST INTO NECK OF DNIEPER BEND Position of Germans Increasingly Critical IN SPITE OF VIOLENT COUNTER-ATTACKS NINTH DAY OF CONFLICT IN MELITOPOL LONDON, October 21. The Russians have advanced further into the neck of the Dnieper Bend and are increasing their threat to the German forces still in the bend. Mr Paul Winterton, the London “News-Chronicle’s” Moscow correspondent, says the Russian drive on Krivoi Rog is the most important since Stalingrad. The Germans in the Dnieper bend are in an exceedingly dangerous position. German reinforcements have been rushed up and thrown into violent counter-attacks, but though these have slowed down the Red Army’s progress, they have been unable to stop it. Moscow announces the capture of Zheltiyevody, 28 miles from Krivoi Rog, bringing the Russians half-way across the Dnieper bend. The statement adds that the Germans are rushing troops from other sectors to the break-through area.
