ELECTRIC POWER
MEETING OF WAIRARAPA BOARD REVENUE FOR SIX MONTHS. RECONSTRUCTION IN MASTERTON (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Electric Power Board at Carterton today the Secretary-Manager, Mr G. Brown, stated that for the first six months (April-September) of the financial year the net revenue at £41,618 represented a gain of £214 on the previous year and a decrease of £987 on the estimate. Mr Brown said that the position was more than compensated for by the substantial reduction in cost of power and by the amount the cost of power was less than the estimate. The number of units purchased from the Public Works Department in September increased by only 1.27 per cent and it seemed there would be a margin in the summer months. There appeared no reason why they should not allow on certain new load provided it was limited to the summer months only. The chief engineer, Mr H. B. Keenan, stated that reticulation in Queen Street, Masterton, had been temporarily repaired but reconstruction was left until after the war and until such times as the proposed town planning scheme took place. Preliminary arrangements were made to shut down the lower Korarau station from November 15 to November 22 to enable the lower dam to be cleared out. Both plants had given a maximum output of units. Advice had been received from the Electricity Controller to the effect that he was prepared to reconsider previous line construction applications. A report had been prepared from the board’s previous investigations, on hydro electric development in the Wairarapa district, with particular reference to the Waiohine scheme.
