LABOUR DAY
TO BE A NORMAL HOLIDAY STATEMENT BY MINISTERS (By Telegraph—Press Association.) • WELLINGTON, This Day. Labour Day, which falls on Monday next, is to be observed as ' a normal holiday, announced the Minister of Labour, Mr Webb, and the Minister of Supply, Mr Sullivan, in a joint statement issued last night. They said that in certain industrial operations, however, it might be necessary for reasons of supply to require that work be performed on Labour Day. These would be the subject matter of individual direction to employers by the responsible controller. Where work was thus performed, such special rates of pay as were prescribed would operate. “The decision to allow the day as a normal holiday is one that will be welcomed by thousands of workers and employers alike,” said the Ministers. “Maintenance of the supply position has involved continued effort on the part of the persons working in the industries concerned, and it is expected that any loss of output on that day will be fully made up as a result of the recuperative value of the well-earned break from work.”
