BOROUGH AFFAIRS
GREYTOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD LAST NIGHT. STATE OF CEMETERY RESERVE. (“Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Grey- 1 town Borough Council was held last night when there were present: The Mayor (Mr A. W. Horton), Councillors W. A. Tate, A. Stuart, E. Balfour, G. F. Eagar, A. J. Farley, F. Wood, H. McKenna, and H. C. Trotman. The Town Clerk submitted a statement in connection with the rates collected. The Mayor stated that he was pleased with the position. The amount collected, on the last rebate day (£3,387) was a record for the borough. ( The health inspector reported that there had been no infectious diseases reported during the past quarter. Seventeen samples of milk had been taken and found satisfactory. An inspection of the poultry yards at Mr W. H. Jordan’s premises was made, and no offence against the Health Act had been committed. The question of cleaning up the Cemetery Reserve was raised by Councillor Stuart, who stated that a large qquantity of metal was still left and the gorse had not been cut. Councillor Farley said that other sites in the district, used for a similar purpose as the reserve, were being properly cleaned up, but this area had received scanty treatment. The council decided to ask that the Public Works Department carry out the original agreement in connection with the reserve. The trustees of the estate of R. W. Tate wrote stating that the borough sewer had overflowed and that the trustees would hold the council liable for damage done or any future damage. The Health Officer reported that an inspection had been made of the borough sewer running through the property of the estate of R. W. Tate. The abnormal wot weather had aggravated the position. There did not appear to have been any damage done nor were the conditions injurious to health. The Mayor slated that he had inspected the property during the heavy rains and very little water was coming from the pipes. The area generally was very wet and surface water was evident in other parts of the property apart from that near the sewer line. After further discussion it was decided to reply that the council cannot admit any liability in the matter.
