FEATHERSTON

BOROUGH COUNCIL BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Featherston Borough Council there were present: The Mayor (Mr J. W. Card), Councillors S. P. Batcheler, C. A. Farrier, W. J. Boston, B. B. Donald, C. C. Kenward, R. R. P. Hardy and T. G. Hardie.

The treasurer reported the following bank balances: —District Fund A/c, ci., £7OO 5s 2d; Cemetery A/c, cr.., £124 12s 6d; Domain A/c, cr., £6l 6s 3d, Mayor’s Relief Fund A/c, cr.., £74 4s 9d; Water Supply Loan, 1936 A/c, cr., £44 16s 3d; Library A/c, cr., £36 12s lid.

The Health Inspector reported that the general health of the town was very satisfactory. The Masterton County Council forwarded £53 10s 9d being the Borough Council’s share of heavy traffic fees up till August 31. The Wairarapa Hospital Board forwarded a copy of the estimates for the year, which showed a drop in the annual payment by the borough from £331 to £236 3s Bd.

Mr D. Scholes wrote concerning the state of Ludlum Street and also attended the meeting to explain the position. The council decided that the Works Committee inspect the street in order to see what could be done.

The ranger reported having dealt with 35 cattle and 4 horses during the month. It was resolved that a circular be sent to all those who have not paid for their earthquake chimney damage repair, and that proceedings be taken to recover all unpaid accounts. The council expressed its thanks to Messrs F. Cassidy and E. Neill for the work done by them in connection with the sewerage. It was resolved that £25 be spent on new books for the library. Enjoyable Euchre Party. An enjoyable euchre party was held in the Red Cross Society’s rooms yesterday. Mrs McGarvie was the winner at cards, and Mrs Carter was successful in a competition held. Donations were received from Mesdames Lyford, Arch. Clark, J. Sadler and N. Matthews. Personal Items. A very enjoyable time was spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs Bert Higginson when Gunner G. Higginson was the guest of honour. Music, games, singing anti dancing were indulged in. Supper and the singing of Auld Lang Syne brought the gathering to a close. Gunner Higginson recently returned from the Middle East. Private and Mrs A. Annair left yesterday on a visit to relatives at Picton. COSY THEATRE “REAP THE WILD WIND” Tomorrow night's excellent programme will be headed by the thrilling drama “Reap the Wild Wind,” in which Ray Milland. Paulette Goddard, John Wayne and Robert Preston have the leading roles. This is a picture patrons should not miss seeing.
