CARTERTON
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Carterton Women’s Institute, Mesdames Robinson and Steffert were appointed delegates to the half-yearly Federation meeting on November 12. Three new members were proposed. Mrs W. P. Williams, a foundation member of the Institute, was a guest. The president referred to her impending departure from Carterton, and expressed the good wishes of the members for her future welfare. Mrs‘Williams was presented with a dainty shoulder spray.
Mrs M. Worsfold, accompanied on the piano by Miss Verna Irwin, sang two songs, which were much appreciated. Mr J. E. Lea, port missioner for The Friend to Sailors’ Mission, addressed the meeting, giving many interesting details of the work done for sailors while in port. He asked the members to support the appeal for funds to provide a permanent hostel in Wellington.
The competitions were judged by Mrs Tankersley and resulted as follows: —Best bloom or truss of shrub, Mrs Steffert 1, Mrs Hurndell 2, Mrs H. Goodin 3; shortbread, Mrs H. Goodin 1, Mrs Hurndell 2, Mrs Steffert 3; best refooting of silk stocking, Mrs Steffert 1. ORDER OF DRUIDS TOTARA LODGE MEETING. Arch Druid Bro. H. J. Bassett presided over the meeting of Totara Lodge, No. 3, U.A.0.D., held last night. The Arch Druid made reference to the death of Bro John Waghorn, whose membership of Totara Lodge dated I back to July, 1892, after which a vote of condolence was carried in silence. Superintendent Bro. W. Fryer reported on the opening of the Juvenile Lodge, and asked for the support of senior members in every way to encourage the boys. An appeal was made for senior- members to become honorary members of the Juvenile Lodge, the cost being only 2s Gd per year, which would go to the management fund. A prize to the value of one guinea was to be given for the juvenile member who introduced the most benefit members into the Lodge in the coming year. It was decided to hold a dance on November 13 in the State Theatre, the proceeds to go to the Juvenile Lodge. The secretary was directed to purchase health stamns to the value of £l. Sick pay and accounts amounting to £l5 5s 4d were passed for payment. Lease of Memorial Park. A meeting of the Management Committee of the Wairarapa Rugby Football Union will be held tomorrow week at Carterton, to discuss with Mr S. S. Dean, of the New Zealand Union, the lease of Memorial Park, Masterton. Parcels for Overseas. The Carterton Patriotic Committee last evening packed 296 parcels, which are to be sent to members of the Armed Forces overseas. The parcels will be forwarded to Wellington today. Personal Items. The funeral of the late Mrs Sarah Booth took place yesterday afternoon at the Clareville cemetery, there being a large cortege. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. W. F. Stent, of St. Mark’s Church. Many beautiful wreaths were forwarded. The pall-bearers were Messrs E. Goode, T. Goode, Harold Thompson, Eric Thompson, C. E. Gray and J. H. Good. Mr Thos. S. Arcus, who had been an inmate of the Croydon Hospital, has recovered sufficiently to be able to return to his home. Mr A. E. Ansell, traffic officer under the Transport Department, has received notice of his transfer from the South Wairarapa area to Petone, and will shortly leave Carterton to take up his new duties. Farewell Gathering. On Friday evening, officers and men of the 27th Company, Traffic Control Corps, will entertain at a farewell gathering at the State Theatre their j commander, Lieut. A. E. Ansell, who will shortly leave the district to take up. new duties at Petone.
