When E. M. Forster’s radio play, “Celestial Omnibus,” was revived for the second time, the 8.8. C. producer, Leonard Cottrell, suddenly found that ho could not use the actor he had chosen for the principal part—that of a boy. Fortunately, the 8.8. C. staff in Birmingham (where the play was performed) included a secretary, Dorothy English, who had experience in the playing of boys’ parts. With no more than two hours’ rehearsal, she took the radio part, and did it so well that the third performance in every way equalled, if not surpassed, the other two.
