OTHER PEOPLE'S IDEAS

FARM LABOUR SHORTAGE (To the Editor.) Sir, —Your leader of October 14 is interesting, but I would like to point out that the farmers are to blame somewhat for their position, or is it the Farmers’ Union? 1 understand that this Union asked the Government to bo left unessential so they could dispose ol their employees if necessary. Is it fair that any section of the people should be relieved of responsibilities at a time like this? 1 personally have tried for months now to go over to work on agricultural machinery, but have been instructed lo stay put. If the farmers are prepared to become an essential industry, a person could go over without much difficulty to assist in what I consider a most essential industry.—l am, etc., HERBERT JOHN KINGSNORTH. Masterton, October 14. TRADERS AND SHOW DAY (To the Editor.) Sir,—The Retailers’ Association having requested retailers to close at 11 a.m. on Saturday the 16th inst., for the Masterton races, it is assumed that shopkeepers will also be asked to close at midday on October 28, for the Carterton Show. If the Carterton Society wants the Masterton shops to be closed, it should arrange for its “People’s Day” on some other day than a Thursday and not in the week in which Labour Day is observed. The closing can, in any case be of little benefit to the Show, as from observation over a number of years, members of staffs utilise the holiday foi any other purpose than attending the Show. This second holiday in one week, falling, as it docs on the day before Friday, has always been a bugbear to certain trades, and the time has arrived, it is suggested, for retailers to take a stand and observe ordinary hours on October 28 of this year. — Yours, etc., FOODSTUFFS. Masterton .October 15.
