Mr N. E. Hutchings has been appointed Under-Secretary of the Public Works Department. The Rev. Douglas J. Smith, of Mount Eden, has been unanimously nominated by the Auckland Presbytery as moder-ator-designate of the General Assembly of the Church for the 1944-45 term. He was nominated also by the South Auckland Presbytery. The death occurred yesterday afternoon at the Lewisham Hospital, Wellington, of Mr Frederick Roffe, the superintendent and secretary of the Wellington District Free Ambulance. Mr Roffe, who was 59 years of age. had been superintendent of this service since its inception on November 9. 1927.

The funeral of the late Mr E. H. Spackman took place yesterday afternoon- at Masterton, there being a very large cortege. The services at the residence and at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. D. McNeur. Among many others, wreaths were forwarded by Transport (Wairarapa), Ltd., and Messrs Fly and Young, Ltd. The pallbearers were Messrs F. B. Gray, Alex. Young, T. Nelson, R. Torwick, W. Garner and S. Flaws. The Post and Telegraph Department, with which the deceased was associated as mail contractor over a period of thirty years, was represented by Mr M. M. - Simpson, Postmaster at Masterton.

Thousands of citizens filled the Roman Catholic Cathedral at Christchurch yesterday and many more unable to gain admittance stood in driving rain outside the doers to hear the celebration of Solemn Pontitlcial Requiem Mass lor the late Bishop Brodie. The cathedral was draped in black and purple, and the officiating priests wore black vestments. Mass was celebrated by Bishop Listen., of Auckland, and Archbishop O'Shea presided at the throne. The coadjutor Bishop of Dunedin. .Bishop O'X'eil. assisted in the sanctuary. Among the mourners were the Minister of Supply. Mr Sullivan. representing th? Prime Mmister: the Minister of ln:ern:t! Affairs, Mr Parry; the Minister of Labour. Mr Webb: the I eo.e.er of the Opposition. Mr Holland: Areb.bisb.ep West-Watson, and the Rev. T. W. Armour. The pallbearers were members of the Hibern:an Society, and other members of this society provided the guard of honour.
