BRITISH FLEET
PART FREED FOR ACTION IN PACIFIC TRIBUTE TO MEN OF MIDGET SUBMARINES PAID BY COLONEL KNOX (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.25 a.m.) WASHINGTON, October 12. Although German submarines are being sent into the Mediterranean, part of the British Fleet will be freed for Pacific operations, now that the Mediterranean has been cleared of enemy surface craft. The Secretary for the Navy (Colonel Knox) made this statement at a Press conference. Colonel Knox said the British midget sumarines which immobilised the German 35,000 ton battleship Tirpitz were operated with two-man crews. The attack against the Tirpitz was carried out while he was in Britain. It was characterised by an amazingly high spirit of daring and courage. “It was one of the most difficult things ever attempted,” Colonel Knox said. He described the damage to Naples as frightful. He said it' was a scene of utter destruction and despair.
