Conditions were ideal at the Opaki racecourse this morning when several candidates for the Masterton meeting on Saturday were exercised. It is most likely that the majority of the visiting horses will be galloped on Friday morning and this morning's work was chiefly confined to locally-trained horses. Fiddler’s Green is looking in good racing fettle for the Masterton Handicap. Clutterbuck will have the ride. Clutterbuck will also have the mounts on Meermint. Fort Royal, and the two-year-old Killarney Boy. Clifford wil ride Gynerio. Sandy Bay and a two-year-old. He will weigh in at 8.7.
Metonymy, who it will be recalled, was raced by the late Mr. C. A. Cameron, is now owned by Messrs. H. and B. McKenzie, and will be ridden by C. Boyd.
I. Galvin and A. Toki, who have been successful in the saddle at the Paeroa and Auckland meetings, will ride at the meeting. Indian Sign is in fine fettle, and Trainer Tom George is keeping him that way for his Trentham engagement where he will run over a mile.
In the juvenile race, George’s stable will be represented by Sir Croupier (K. Smith), Beau Cheval and Gay Corrie. W. J. Broughton will ride one and Messervy the other of the two latter horses.
K. Smith, the stable apprentice, will also ride Maori Bank and Pell Mell. Cheffey will have the ride on Gamble.
