PATROL ACTIVITY
AND ARTILLERY DUELS ON THE VOLTURNO FRONT WIDE-RANGING ALLIED AIR ATTACKS LONDON, October 12. Laud lighliug in Hilly during the past 24 hours lias been confined to artillery duels and patrol activity on both the Fifth and the Eighth armies’ fronts. In the western sector, between Capua and the sea, artillery duels have been proceeding across the Volturno River. North and east of this sector patrols have been active. Allied air forces have struck hard at the enemy’s road and rail communications. Long range bombers and fighters have attacked airfields on Rhodes and other islands. No enemy aircraft were seen and no planes were lost. The same airfield at Rhodes was also raided a few hours later by Middle East bombers, also without loss. A correspondent of the British United Press with the Fifth Army reports that the Germans are systematically killing all live stock on sectors of the Volturno front. The Allied troops found slaughtered horses, cows, and pigs scattered over the countryside.
