MAURICEVILLE
COUNTY COUNCIL DAMAGE ON DAGG’S ROAD. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday afternoon. Mr E. W. Cheetham presided, there being also present Councillors A. Forsberg, A. Gray, O. Welch, J. H. MacDonald and D. Bennett. The treasurer’s report which showed a credit balance of £2119 6s Od. was adopted. A letter was received from the Wairarapa Hospital Board relative to a special loan of £15,000, for the cost of strengthening the nurses’ Old Home. It was resolved that the explanation offered in regard to the considerable increase in the estimate for tthe cost of this work be accepted and the council expressed its agreement in regard to the application for the loan. A letter was received from the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, stating that the suggestion from the council, that logs at present used in road blocks should be made available to sawmillers, was receiving consideration, and that arrangements as to their disposal were in the hands of the Timber Controller. The resignation of Mr C. B. Seymour, as a member of the Hastwell Cemetery Trustees, was received and accepted with regret. It was resolved that Mr Claude Seymour and Mr W. H. Cheetham be appointed trustees in place of Mr Seymour, and the late Mr A. V. Madsen.
The County Overseer, Mr P. N. Jamieson, reported that a bridge on Main Highway No. 816 was under repair. The overseer reported considerable damage on Dagg’s Road, where an old wooden culvert had collapsed and part of tthe road had slipped away. It was stated that a large slip had come down on the Mangarei Road, and the overseer was instructed to give a general report on this matter.
