WILL MAKE CONTRIBUTION TO PEACE SETTLEMENT. STATEMENT BY UNION FINANCE MINISTER. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) LONDON, October 11. “General Smuts will make a major contribution to the peace settlement. He will see that the peace is just.”— This reference, in a speech by the South African Finance Minister, Mr. Hofmeyr, to the presence of General Smuts in London is taken as a hint that one of the purposes of the visit is to assist in preparing for the peace settlement and the post-war reconstruction of Europe.
