PUBLIC APATHETIC
TOWARDS CLOSING OF OPERA HOUSE OPINION OF TRUST MEMBERS. “MORE OF A FUSS SHOULD BE MADE." Reference to the “apathetic attitude” of the public towards the closing of the Opera House was made at a meeting of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust by the chairman, Mr H. P. Hugo. Mr Hugo said that no doubt this attitude was due to the absence of the' youth of the town on active service or engaged in essential work in the cities. Otherwise, he said, much more would have been heard. No ojre seemed to worry about it. In Musterton there would soon be practically no hotel accommodaiton, no Opera House and no municipal hall. “We are going back half a century,” observed Mr J. Macfarlane Laing. question will soon be asked, ‘Why live in Masterton’?” Mr Hugo said more of a fuss should be made. Mr A. Owen Jones said it was not a matter relating to the Opera House so much as the town having some place of entertainment. “It is a catastrophe,” said Mr E. G. Eton. Mr C. E. Grey: “A needless one.” The subject was not further discussed.
