Slight Earthquake. A slight earthquake was experienced in Masterton yesterday at 8.15 a.m. American Red Cross Club. A dance will be held at the American Red Cross Service Club, Masterton, tomorrow night. All registered girls are urged to attend. Fall from Cycle. Max Evans, aged 8 years, of 173 Dixon Street, Masterton, was admitted to the Masterton Hospital on Saturday night with a broken leg which he received in a fall from a cycle. His condition is satisfactory. Interhouse Marching. Plans and instructions for the Wairarapa Interhouse Association’s marching competition, to be held next month, are now available from the. secretary, Mr V. G. Davis. The plans are interesting and differ from those for last year's competition. Bookmakers’ Phones. The Postmaster-General, Mr. Webb, has authorised the disconnection of telephones used by persons convicted of bookmaking, and instructions have been issued for their removal, according to a statement by the Post and Telegraph Department, Christchurch. The action is taken under Telephone Regulation No. 73, which authorises the Minister to disconnect any telephone used for any ilegal, immoral or improper purpose. Odd Fellows’ Dance. The Masonic Hall, Master!on, was filled with dancers on Saturday night when the local Odd Fellows Lodge held a most enjoyable dance. Excellent music was supplied by Mr J. Barnes’s orchestra and extras were played by members of the orchestra. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss A. Burton and Mr B. Marsh. Bro. B. J. Seddon efficiently carried out the duties of M.C. and under his leadership an enjoyable community sing was held. Mr W. L. Butler provided appreciated spotlight effects. Sisters Brader and Rickards were responsible for the suppei' arrangements and special thanks were extended to all who assisted to make the gathering such a success. The next 'dance will be held in November. Homing Pigeon Racing. The Masterton Homing Pigeon Club held a successful race from Waiouru, an airline distance of 104 miles. The weather conditions were good, with a Strong north-westerly wind. As a result, the winning bird flew at a rate of 1356 yards per minute. The results were as follows: R. Stewart & Son’s Young Imperial, 1356 yards per minute, 1; N. Gardner's Nightly, 1347 yards per min. 2; R. Braggins's Lady Sherwood, 1344 y.p.m., 3; W. Drury’s Salami, 1331 y.p.m., 4; R. Stewart & Son’s Nimble Chief, 1327y.p.m., 5; J. Mayes’s Renown’s Best, 1321 y.p.m., 6. Sixty-two birds were entered. Next week the New Zealand Federation race will be held from Helensville, an airline distance of 304 miles. This race is also for the F. Yule trophy. A single toss will be held from Taumarunui, an airline distance of 145 miles.
