CARTERTON

BOWLING CLUB DANCE ON SATURDAY NIGHT. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Carterton bowling Club held a, most enjoyable dance on Saturday night. The State Theatre was packed with visitors from all parts of the district. The club’s social committee, ably assisted by members of the Ladies’ Committee, worked hard to make the function the success it was. A first-class supper was provided. Mr. .Tom Udy’s orchestra prayed the music and much appreciated extras were contributed by Misses Mary Herrick, Verna Irwin, Evelyn Lorenzen and Mr. Gordon Challis. Mr. Cliff Bambry was an efficient M.C. Dancing competitions, which were judged by Mr. and Mrs. W. Moroney, were: Waltzing competition, Miss Betty and Mr, J. Herrick; statue valetta, Miss B. Herrick and Mr. K. Matthews; spot fox trot, Miss B. Parker and Mr. B. O’Neale. Mr. J. L. Harris, president of the club, thanked everyone for their patronage and announced that in all probability another dance would be held in the near future. CHURCH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL SERVICES YESTERDAY. Successful Church anniversary services were held in the Carterton Methodist Church yesterday. Special singing was a feature of the services. The choir, under the baton of Mr. V aughan, rendered several anthems. The preacher for the day was the Rev. A. O. Harris, of Petone. In the morning service his address was mainly to Church people. He made a plea for a renewed faith in Christ and His, mission through the church. The anniversary celebrations will be continued on Tuesday evening, when a knife and fork tea will be held in the Methodist Sunday School, at 5.30 o'clock. This will be followed by a meeting in the Church at 7.30, when an interesting talk will be given by the Rev. Mr. Robertson. An excellent musical programme will also be presented. Boy Scouts. A card tournament under the jurisdiction of the Carterton Boy Scout Committee was held on Saturday night. Prizes were won by Mesdames J. Hooper 1, W. Herdman 2 and Messrs C. Holland 1 and Wadsworth 2. Personal. Mrs. Hill, of Kent Street, Carterton, left this morning for a fortnight’s holiday in Hastings and Napier. Home and Schools Association. On Wednesday, October 20, the committee of the Home and Schools Association will hold a dance in the State Theatre. Mrs. Ashton’s orchestra will provide the music. A good floor and excellent supper are assured. A good attendance is expected as the funds will go towards a worthy object, the assistance of school children. Mrs. D. Rofe is the secretary. Personal. Mrs. lan Bond, of Carterton, has received word from the authorities that her husband, Driver lan Bond, who has been a prisoner of war in Italy, had made his escape and was now with Allied forces at base camp. Mr. and Mrs. R. N. Wallis, of Palmerston North, were visitors to Carterton during the weekend. Earthquakes. Two earthquake shocks were felt in Carterton on Sunday morning, one at 6 o'clock and a particularly sharp one at 8.15 o'clock.
