VILA OCCUPIED

JAPANESE HEADQUARTERS MUCH ENEMY MATERIAL CAPTURED. INCLUDING ARTILLERY. LONDON, October 10. American forces have occupied Vila, the Japanese headquarters on Kolombangara Island, in the Central Solomons. The first landing in the Vila area, made four days ago. did not meet with any opposition, and all the Japanese positions were in Allied hands yesterday. No living Japanese were to be seen anywhere in the area occupied. A large quantity of equipment, abandoned by the enemy, including artillery, has been captured by the Americans.
