BOWLING SEASON
OPENED ON SATURDAY GATHERING AT MASTERTON GREEN MEMORIAL SEAT UNVEILED The official opening for the season of the Masterton Bowling Club took place on Saturday afternoon when there was a large and representative attendance which included visitors from the Eketahuna, Park, Carterton, Greytown, Martinborough and Featherston clubs. Favourable comment was passed on the condition of the greens. In declaring the season officially open the president, Mr H. B. Thomas, extended a cordial welcome to the many visitors, and their wives. He referred to the. happy spirit of co-operation which existed among the committee and members and said that the past season had gone like clockwork. In view of the success of the past season he saw no reason why** the new season should be less successful. The greens, said Mr Thomas, acording to members with years of experience, were looking the best yet and he thanked the green superintendent, Mr J. V. Gordon, the green keeper, Mr W. Bishop, and all who had assisted in topdressing, etc., for their splendid work. A shrub which had been clipped to form a V was referred to by Mr Thomas, who extended congratulations to Mr G. Hayne on being re-elected president of the Wairarapa Centre. Mr Thomas paid a glowing tribute to the memory of the late club patron, Mr F. H. Dunderdale. He said that Mr Dunderdale had truly carried out the injunction that it was more blessed to give than to receive. Mr Thomas said he was a gentleman and a fine citizen. The club had erected a splendid memorial seat to commemorate Mr Dun- ' derda'le’s memory and he called on Mr H. A. R. Dunderdale to unveil the seat. In doing so Mr Dunderdale expressed appreciation on behalf of his aunt and himself of the remarks passed by Mr Thomas.
Mr Thomas said that through gifts of seats by members the seating accommodation was now over 75 and, he extended an invitation to members’ wives to attend on Saturday afternoons as guests of the club. The Rev W. F. Stent, of Carterton, extended the good wishes of the Centre to the club and pres"ented certificates won by Messrs Freeman, W. Davies, J. V. Gordon and W. Hendry at the last New Year tournament. Mrs Freeman accepted the certificate on behalf of her husband who is on active service.
Mrs H. B. Thomas sent the first bowl across the green. The club rooms were artistically decorated with bowls of spring flowers and a competent band of Radies served afternoon tea.
On behalf of members and visitors Mr J. V. Gordon thanked the ladies for the excellent afternoon tea. Mrs Thomas replied. Mr G. H. Mackley, M.P., who had sent an apology for absence on account of a prior engagement, called in later in the afternoon.

Grant, Freeman, Dorset, Morton (s) 7, Stewart, Cotter, Thomas, Chapman (s) 18. PARK CLUB PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. The official opening of the Masterton Park Club's green also took place on Saturday. Among the 100 bowlers present were teams from the Eketahuna, Masterton. Carterton, Greytown and Martinborough Clubs, and visiting players from as far afield as Dunedin. The president, Mr A. Osborne, referred to the passing of several old stalwarts of the club in Messrs W. Gibson, C. Hawke, R. Kilmister, J. McKenzie, and a former member, Mr W. Strickland. Mr Osborne referred to the tremendous amount of voluntary work that had been done during the recess, particularly regarding the new pavilion. which would fill a long-felt want. He expressed the hope that the visitors, whom he specially welcomed, and members would find the green up to its usually high standard. The following trophies were present-ed:-—Champion singles, H. M. Smith; champion pairs. H. Duckworth an&R. Jenkins is); champion fours, P.-Tre-vorrow. E. Brown, G. Brown and H. Smith (sb Mr G. Hayne, president of the Wairarapa Centre, said the club was singularly fortunate in having such a loyal band of voluntary workers. He had watched the chib from a mere handful of members to its present record of over seventy. He wished the club the best of luck and a happy season. Mr Osborne then declared the green open, and Mrs Osborne threw up the kilty and played the first bowl. The afternoon tea arrangements were in the hands of a capable ladies’ committee. Owing to the reconstruction work, Mrs Watson kindly placed the facilities of the kiosk at .the disposal of the club. The thanks iff the club are extended to the ladies for their muchappreciated asistance. The games resulted as fololw:— Holdsworth, Lewis, E.
