FEATHERSTON

WAIRARAPA RACES NEW YEAR STAKES INCREASED. (“Times-Age” Special.) At a meeting of the stewards of the Wairarapa Racing Club yesterday it was decided to increase the stake money for the New Year meeting to £4OOO. Mr. F. E. Merlet, of Masterton, forwarded an interesting card concerning a meeting held by the Wairarapa Jockey Club on February 12, 1880. On the programme of six events was the Wairarapa Stakes of £75 run over two miles and a distance. PARCELS FOR SOLDIERS SUCCESSFUL DANCE. A sucessful dance for the purpose of raising funds to provide parcels for local soldiers overseas was held in the Pahautea Hall. Music was supplied by Mr T. Udy, and Mr Elbe was M.C. The competitions were won as follows: —Monte Carlo dance, Mrs Hubbard and Mr Bridgewater; lucky spot dance, Miss Nancy Cade and Mr A. Weatherstone; dinner, Mi’ B. Bargh. St. John’s Ladies’ Guild. The Kahutara-Pahautea branch of St. John’s Ladies’ Guild held its monthly meeting at the Kahutara Hall, Mrs D. C. Collins presiding over a good attendance of members and friends. During the last three Octobers members have donated eggs for babies’ homes in Wellington. This month 60 dozen eggs were given and are to be distributed to the two babies’ homes in Wellington. Mrs D. Barton gave a very interesting address on Morocco, and was accorded a vote of thanks. Mrs A. C. Pearce presented Mrs Barton with a bouquet. Afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mesdames C. Matthews, Humphries and Stewart. Personal. Advice has been received by Mr J. Juno that his son, A.C. Axel Juno, has arrived safely at his destination. COSY THEATRE DOUBLE FEATURE PROGRAMME. Tonight a double feature programme will be presented at the Cosy Theatre. “Doctors Don’t Tell” is a frank and thrilling story in which John Beal and Florence Rice have the chief roles. It is a picture which should not be missed. “The Man Who Wouldn’t Die” is a splendid drama in which the chief roles are portrayed by Lloyd Nolan and Marjorie Weaver.
